WORDS & DOUBT

It’s strange how creation works. A few months ago, I started writing a new show and I did not doubt what I wanted to say with it and how I felt this was the next public project I wanted to do. As the script kept evolving, I found myself hitting a wall as if the ideas that triggered the creative spark were the ones I needed to embrace right now. And it’s this doubt that makes the process interesting because if there is no room for it, I don't think the depth of the work will not be the same.

What to do in these cases? Should you just hold on to your initial thought or stop until you find the answer to continue? Every case is a case and it’s up to us to understand what we need at a moment like this. Sometimes, you have to just work on something else to get some distance from the work and come back to it with fresh eyes. Other times, it’s the fact that you keep working on the project that allows you to find the answer you seek.

In this particular instance, I decided to start writing a new piece and continue on this route until I probably find myself in the same crossroads as before. Sometimes, we just need to wait for the right time to finish a project. Until then, we can open several doors and see which one feels right. I have no idea which of the two scripts I will finish first, nor if either will even be produced. Most of the things I write never end up on stage but that’s part of the job. Let me embrace the uncertainty now and continue the work.
